Human angiostrongyliasis.

چکیده
Human angiostrongyliasis caused by Angiostrongylus cantonensis, a rat lungworm, has been reported globally. Human infections are acquired by ingestion of raw or undercooked snails or slugs, paratenic hosts such as prawns, or contaminated vegetables that contain the infective larvae of the worm. So far, at least 2827 cases of the disease have been documented worldwide. During the past few years, several outbreaks of human angiostrongyliasis have been reported in mainland China, Taiwan, and the USA. Additionally, sporadic cases in travellers who have returned from endemic areas have been reported. We review the clinical features, diagnosis, and treatment of human angiostrongyliasis, and describe the geographical distribution and prevalence of A cantonensis. Educating the public about the dangers of eating raw or undercooked intermediate and paratenic hosts in endemic areas is essential for the prevention and control of this foodborne zoonotic disease.

International Symposium on Angiostrongylus and Angiostrongyliasis, 2010
In discussing the epidemiology of the disease, it was noted the first reported case of human angiostrongyliasis came from Taiwan in 1945. Since then, several outbreaks and >2,800 cases of this disease have been reported worldwide. However, the number of cases is probably underestimated given that many physicians might be unaware of angiostrongyliasis because of its rarity; thus, numerous cases ...

Human abdominal angiostrongyliasis is a zoonotic disease caused by ingestion of the L3 larvae of Angiostrongylus costaricensis. The human infection gives rise to a pathological condition characterized by acute abdominal pain, secondary to an inflammatory granulomatous reaction, marked eosinophilia and eosinophilic vasculitis. Most commonly this disease is limited to intestinal location, primary...
متن کاملDevelopment of Lateral Flow Immunoassay for Antigen Detection in Human Angiostrongylus cantonensis Infection
Angiostrongyliasis is difficult to be diagnosed for the reason that no ideal method can be used. Serologic tests require specific equipment and are not always available in poverty-stricken zone and are time-consuming. A lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) may be useful for angiostrongyliasis control. We established a LFIA for the diagnosis of angiostrongyliasis based on 2 monoclonal antibodies (mAb...

Cerebral angiostrongyliasis due to Angiostrongylus cantonensis continues to affect human health and productivity in Thailand. The dietary habits of the populace have been an important contributing factor, particularly in the northeast of the country where the disease is endemic and the indigenous people enjoy a local undercooked snail dish called "koi-hoi". Hundreds of cases of disease continue...
